How Does Your Garden Grow

We are in the middle of an awful heat wave.  The expected temperature for today is 107 degrees.  Sorry, that’s too hot for man or beast.  I mention the beasts because the County Fair is this weekend so I’m sure that the animals are just as uncomfortable as the people.

On super hot days like this I spend a lot of my time in the garden with a hose in my hand.  There is something magical about hand watering; peace, calm and an occasional cooling spritz from the hose. It also gives me a chance to really check out how everything is doing.  Because every season is different, just assessing the changes from last year to this offers some very pleasant surprises.

I have an extensive, not big but lots of variety, vegetable garden; seventy percent or more of my whole garden is in edible plants and trees. Among all these treasures my favorites are always the renegades; the things that spring up from seed in the compost.   Since they are strong enough to survive cooking in the pile, they also tend to be vigorous plants and give up the best yields.  I treat them as my friends and they reward me with bumper crops of the very best fruits and vegetable in the World.
